The Gordon State Highlanders faced Cleveland State this past Tuesday in Cleveland, TN. Freshman Cal Fuller had an impressive outing on the mound for the Highlanders limiting offensive opportunities for the Cougars. Fuller controlled the Cleveland State offense and only allowed two hits on one earned run through five innings of work. John Michael Jones and Spencer Douches provided strong relief out of the bullpen with the two only giving up one hit through four innings. The Highlander offense as a whole, had a solid day at the plate. Brett Hawkins led the way going 3 for 4 with a double and Jermond Williams going 2 for 5 at the plate. Williams extended the lead for the Highlanders with a three-run blast to right field in the third inning to give Gordon a 5-0 lead early. Gordon State came out on top with an 8-2 win over Cleveland State.
The Highlanders faced Roane State Community College this weekend in a non-conference three game series. On Friday, Gordon State came out and dominated from start to finish. University of West Georgia commit Cory Bartholomew went six innings on the mound for Gordon and only gave up one hit while striking out nine in a masterful performance. Bartholomew was supported by the Highlander offense in large part to homeruns by Datren Bray, Dane Bullock, and Brian Moore. Jermond Williams also had a strong day at the plate going 2 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. Bartholomew exited the game in the sixth inning leaving RHP Alex Watkins and LHP Josh Hutch to close the game in relief. The Highlanders secured the win in dominating fashion over Roane State 11-1.
On Saturday, Gordon faced Roane State in a double header match up. Gordon State came out on top 4-3 in Game 2 over the visiting Raiders of Harriman, TN. Freshman RHP Adam Leverett starting on the mound for Gordon and did not have one of his best performances as of late. Leverett lasted 3.1 innings and gave up three runs. Sophomore LHP Johnathan Robinson came in relief and shut down the Roane State offense, allowing no hits or runs through 2.2 innings of work to receive his first win of the year. Brian Moore continued his hot streak at the plate going 1 for 3 on the day with two RBIs. Kent Evans also provided support offensively going 2 for 2 with a run scored a two RBIs as well. The Highlanders were able to put up four runs which proved the be enough to win the weekend series against Roane State.
Game 3 was one of a different story for the Highlanders. With a total of four hits and eight strikeouts, Gordon had no answer for Roane State starting RHP Ronnie Engelman. Engelman through a complete game, stabilizing the Highlanders to no runs. West Georgia commit RHP Taylor Boisclair had a brilliant performance on the mound once again for the Highlanders. Boisclair gave up four hits while striking out eight with one run scored through seven innings. Boislcair’s outing moves him to 3-1 on the early season as the Highlanders drop Game 3 with a score of 1-0.
Gordon State has a big week ahead of them facing the defending National Champions, Chipola on Wednesday to head into the weekend to start conference play. The Highlanders will face conference opponent Andrew on Saturday followed by a non-conference double header against Lake Michigan on both Sunday and Monday. Gordon looks to have a great week as they head into conference play.
