Softball Sweeps Thursday Twin Bill Over Andrew College
Sophomore Maddie Greene earns two wins in the circle while allowing just three Tiger hits on the day.
BARNESVILLE, GA – The Highlander pitching staff has been solid all season but it was the team's offense that came alive in the GCAA double header sweep of Andrew College.
Game 1: GSC 8 AC 1
The Highlanders' bats have been silenced as of late in GCAA play. However, getting back to the basics and focusing on the process in practice this week certainly helped the Highlanders find their offensive rhythm. Gordon manufactured 5 runs on 4 hits and a Tiger error in the 3rd inning to secure the game one victory. Morgan Sterrett lead the Highlanders' offense by going 2 for 3 with a double and a stolen base. McKenzie Barnes and Hunter Lee also had two hits a piece. Sophomore Maddie Greene had another impressive outing on the mound. She gave up just 1 run on 1 hit, while striking out 9.
Game 2: GSC 6 AC 5
The Highlanders' bats picked up where they left off in game one and scored in the bottom on the first, but would soon find themselves behind the eight ball and down 5-1 going into the bottom of the 4th. Gordon would string together 4 consecutive hits by Lauren DeLoach, Hunter Lee, Shelby Sims and Taylor Dykes to cut the score to 5-2. On a combination of clutch hitting and aggressive baserunning, pinch hitter Montana Schug hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field, allowing both Lee and Sims to score. The Highlanders would tie the game at five on Addy Allegretti's double off of the center field wall scoring Cheyanne Mosteller in the 5th. The Highlanders would take the lead for good in the 6th when Shelby Sims' tripled to right field and Taylor Dykes follwed up with a RBI single. Freshman Natalie Hardy got the start for the Highlanders. She went 3.1 innings while giving up 2 earned runs and striking out 3. Sophomore Maddie Greene came in to relieve Hardy in the 4th. She pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless softball while allowing just two hits and striking out two.
The Highlanders are currently 5-5 in GCAA play and are tied for 4th in the league standings with their Saturday opponent, ABAC. Games are scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM in Tifton, GA, weather permitting.
